I have this *thing* for Midwestern accents. I tend to like the person who's saying something, whatever it is. If it's smart, I am likely to develop a crush on the person, but no matter what, I feel at ease around the person. This is particularly true for the northern Midwest (Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota).

That fact and a post a friend made about fashion standards in locations other than New York remind me, once again, that there are reasons NY is not such a fertile dating/living ground for me. There aren't too many people to whom I'm attracted here, and people who are attracted to me tend to want me to be something I'm not (a top, way butch, skinnier, etc). I'm attracted to carhartts and knit caps and boots and wool sweaters, darn it! I think cross-country skiing or winter camping would be an amazing date (or adventure, for the latter). I have no interest in going to a bar after 10:30PM, and would like to be heading home from an evening out no later than 11PM. In Wisconsin, even the femmes wear Carhartts. They just wear them with cute long underwear.

I do so appreciate the subway, especially given my great access. I am a block away from two lines, three blocks away from eight more and the Long Island Rail Road, and six blocks away from still two other lines--how can I ever move?

Yet today, interviewing someone from Chicago, I felt homesick for a place that's not my home.
