so, I was supposed to be in Pittsburgh right now. However, jetblue decided to cancel my flight, saying "Due to residual effects from the winter weather system in the Northeast, we have cancelled a majority of our flights scheduled to depart after 5:00 p.m. ET today in order to help position the airline for full operations tomorrow."
Basically, it means that because there were delays all day, my after-work flight got canceled. suxor.
suxor #2, I couldn't get on a flight for tomorrow. Apparently they're all full.
So I booked a flight for Saturday afternoon, which had the next available seat. That was not great, but okay. Then I checked again about 10pm, and a seat had opened up for an 8AM Saturday flight. Better! I booked it, but then had a heck of a time convincing the Jetblue rep that this is actually what their rep earlier this evening had told me to do if I found an earlier flight. I used my best Medicaid advocacy skills (very, very firm but always polite, acknowledging that it isn't the rep's fault but determined to have my way) and got a couple of supervisors involved. Finally they found the woman with whom I had been talking earlier (Medicaid work has also taught me to write down the name and exact time of call with whomever I speak about something official) and she fixed it.
As I was writing this, I decided to check Jetblue.com one more time. What do I see but a flight for Friday (uh, that would be today) at 8AM? So I booked it, deciding it was worth missing the stuff I had just now scheduled for tomorrow for getting home sooner. I'm a little worried that I will be sitting on the tarmac for 11 hours like the people I've heard about, but or worse that the flight will be canceled and the Saturday flight won't be available anymore and then I'll be totally screwed, but I think I'm going to risk it.
I've now been on hold with Jetblue today for, oh, 90 minutes or so, all told. The automated thing says that you won't be on hold for more than 20 minutes, but I guess they're just overwhelmed with the weather. At least it's better than this afternoon, when I would call and get a message that said they had too many calls right now, please call tomorrow (and then hung up on me).
ergh travel. I think I would have been okay with the Saturday flight, but it will be nice to see my dad and much easier for him to pick me up than have him leave the car at the airport after he leaves for his trip and try to exchange keys somehow...
Hey Pittsburghers, anyone want to hang out Saturday night? I am chauffering my mother to a concert with her friends, but I don't actually want to attend the concert (it's Calliope, at 7pm, robin and lucinda williams), and would love to avoid starbucks/b&n for the length of the concert. it's a little sad how few people I still know in Pittsburgh, but I'm reaching out to yinzers now.
